More Information and tour datesThe Format has announced plans for a fifty-city summer tour, beginning in their hometown of Phoenix, AZ on July 13th. This will be the third tour in support of their 2006 album Dog Problems, which has sold over 55,000 copies and been called "pitch-perfect indie pop" (Spin). The band has grown a strong and dedicated following opening for artists such as Guster, The All-American Rejects, Jimmy Eat World, Switchfoot and Dashboard Confessional.
"Traditional Marketing" has not proven useful to The Format, who has amassed a dedicated following by embracing alternative means of promotion and quickly integrating new technology. "Owning our own publishing and master has allowed us the freedom to experiment," says singer Nate Ruess. The band, who was the first to embrace SnoCap's MyStore, is also planning to be one of the first bands ever to offer their own branded mobile plan this summer via Sonopia. "We'd be doomed if we sat around and waited for things like radio play to come around. We're just not that band."
Yet another original move will come in early July, when The Format will make Dog Problems available digitally for free over a two-week period. "We understand the reality; kids aren't buying music. We're going to see if we can't pick up 20,000 new sets of ears by offering the album for free. We're betting that the money lost on those record sales will come back when people come see us live this summer."
The Format will also shoot a live DVD on June 14th, at a sold out Mayan Theatre in LA. The DVD will be directed by Sam Erickson (My Morning Jacket, O.A.R., John Mayer). The night will feature Dog Problems in its entirety, with over a dozen guest musicians on stage. The release date will fall sometime in October.
Various bands will join and leave the tour this summer, including Piebald, The Honorary Title, Limbeck, Steel Train, comedian Mike Birbiglia and British magician Ollie Wilde. Confirmed dates include:
