Once just a small coffee shop, The Hotel Cafe has quickly blossomed into not only one of the premier singer/songwriter venues in the United States, but has also been labeled "the place that breaks artists." The artists surrounding The Hotel Cafe regard it as home, where lyrics, voice and a DIY approach rule. On any given night, you can find well known artists (such as: Weezer, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Death Cab For Cutie, KT Tunstall and many more) on the same bill with up-and-comers, playing both as solo artists and as a communal project, sometimes well rehearsed and sometimes in the heat of the moment, and more often than not, jamming into the wee hours of the morning.
For the past 4 years, The Hotel Cafe has been presenting a tour that has hit every major market in the United States and the UK. The concept of the tour was to share the same community vibe with music fans all over the globe. Artists share the stage with fellow tour mates. No cookie-cutter corporate American Idols, just real music, written by real artists, surrounded by real friends, who actually have a story to tell. Starting in March 2008, The Hotel Cafe Tour will embark on another journey that will cover 35+ major markets in North America, before heading over to the United Kingdom and making its entry into new European markets and Japan!
This year's Hotel Cafe Tour features an incredible roster of amazing talent. The tour will feature fan favorites like Cary Brothers, founder of The Hotel Cafe Tour who will be playing every date, and playing host to all of the invited artists. Cary offers up a melodic journey of indie heartache, a nod to the new wave 80's and unabashed pop redemption. The LA Times deemed Who You Are, Brothers' debut LP, a "lushly orchestrated debut," while Entertainment Weekly hailed the album as "the kind of record that you want to listen to all the way through." Ingrid Michaelson, an independent VH1 'You Oughta Know' artist, who became a household name when Old Navy used her song "The Way I Am" in a commercial this past year. Tracks from her LP Girls and Boys have been played on Grey's Anatomy and she has also written a song specifically for the show. Also playing select dates on this year's tour is Sara Bareilles, who has gained recognition for her major label debut Little Voice with her first single "Love Song," currently making its way up the Billboard Top Ten Pop Charts.
Some of the phenomenal up-and-coming talents to hit the road with The Hotel Cafe Tour this year include Dan Wilson, a solo artist, formerly of Semisonic, who's LP Free Life was released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings/Columbia Records. Wilson received a Grammy for his co-writing credit on the Dixie Chicks single' "Not Ready to Make Nice" (2006). Meiko, whose self-titled LP has been heard by millions of new fans through Perez Hilton's blog (he's a fan!), placements on Grey's Anatomy and Moonlight and who will continue to attract fans with upcoming placements on Kyle XY, Dirty Sexy Money and MTV's, The Hills. Her songs have found support on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, New Ground and the nationally-syndicated show, Sounds Eclectic. Meiko's S/T release reached #35 on iTunes' top 100 Albums chart and was the #1 folk album on iTunes following a recent "Indie Spotlight" feature. Also appearing on The Hotel Cafe Tour is Kate Havnevik, whose LP Melankton was released this past year to rave reviews. KCRW's ultimate tastemaker radio host, Nic Harcourt, started playing her demos before her album was even finished being recorded. Music supervisors took note, and her songs have subsequently appeared in The West Wing, The OC, and seven times on Grey's Anatomy.
